Changes in global electrolytic aluminum production capacity
Global electrolytic aluminum built capacity increased slightly. By the middle of June 2024, the total built capacity of electrolytic aluminum in the world was 78.9605 million tons, down 0.16% year on year, and only China increased by about 20,000 tons compared with the beginning of the year. By the end of May, the total built capacity of the world’s other countries excluding China was 34.124 million tons. The total operating capacity from January to May 2024 is also increasing, with the global total operating capacity reaching 72195,500 tons by the end of May.

Total global alumina production in the first May of 2024 was 29.94 million tons, up 4.6% from the same period last year. In January, Alcoa announced the resumption of production at its San Ciprian electrolytic aluminum plant in Spain, but the resumption progress was slow due to cost problems and the production capacity was not large; Magnitude 7 Metals, an electrolytic aluminum plant in the southeastern Missouri town of Marston, said it would cut production. In March, electrolytic aluminum plants in Yunnan Province of China began to resume production periodically, and the global electrolytic aluminum operating capacity increased from that month. Alcoa’s Warrick electrolytic aluminium plant in the US completed the restart of a 54,000 tonne production line in the first quarter. According to the research assessment of Aladdin (ALD), the global alumina production in June 2024 will be about 5.897 million tons, and the total global alumina production in the first half of 2024 will be about 35.838 million tons, with a year-on-year growth of about 3.79%.

In terms of countries, India, Russia and Canada still ranked the top three overseas electrolytic aluminum output in the first half of 2024, with 1.965,000 million tons, 1.866 million tons and 1.659 million tons respectively.
